Wow where to start? I am of the generation who grew up with Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel. Before I saw SR last night I sat down and watched Superman I and II and tried to remember all the emotions I felt seeing SI for the first time as a 9 year old. And I can happily say that I wasn’t disappointed.
From the get go when WB first announced they were going to film another Superman movie and the ongoing problems associated with trying to get it off the ground, I will admit I was worried. Brian Singer is now my new Hero. I had such high expectations and hopes for this movie, and it lived up to every single one.
Visually this movie is stunning and from the opening credits with the magnificent John William's score I was hooked. . Brandon Routh does Superman proud, and there were times I had to remind myself that I wasn’t seeing CR in his portrayal as Clark. While I was concerned about the casting of Kate Bossworth as Lois Lane (I loved her in Blue Crush) I needn’t have worried, yes she’s a little young, but her portrayal of Lois was spot on and I love the way she as a character has mellowed now that she’s a mother.
While this last point has caused a major stir throughout the comic community, for me, it’s a natural progression from SII. The in-jokes and references to the first two movies were wonderful and tied this current installment like SII was released yesterday, not over 20 years ago.
Highlights - Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor – Magnificent. Plane rescue sequence - was like an episode of National Geographic’s ‘Air Crash Investigations’ on steroids, what a rush. Jason Lane – adorable without being cutesy. Brandon Routh. Mobile phone cameras. The final 10 minutes – won’t spoil it, but I did shed a tear. The film was dedicated to Christopher and Dana Reeve.
Other (there were no low lights for me) - While Brandon Routh and Kate Bossworth don’t have the same intense onscreen chemistry that Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder shared, Brandon in particular was able to convince me that Superman and Lois Lane are star crossed lovers.
Brian Singer, you rock! And I can’t wait until the next installment. Thankyou for keeping my Superman alive.
